How my career added up.
At the age of 18, I eagerly anticipated joining the United States Marine Corps (USMC). While waiting to enlist, my mother suggested I gain experience by learning tax preparation at a local tax franchise. There, I assisted undocumented immigrants in obtaining ITINs and managing their small business returns.
Following a medical discharge from the USMC, I enrolled in college to pursue a degree in computer forensics. However, during my freshmen year, a suggestion from an accounting professor, Professor P., I changed my major to accounting. Professor P., head of the accounting department and treasurer of the Lancaster Rotary Club, mentored me and introduced me to the basics of nonprofit accounting.
My Non-profit passions
The intro into nonprofit accounting, marked the beginning of my journey in the nonprofit sector. I began working part-time at Girls on the Run (GOTR) - Columbia alongside my public accounting job. Starting as an operations assistant, I quickly advanced to a program assistant role and was offered a full-time operations manager role, upon graduating from the University of South Carolina with my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
As I embarked on my accounting career, I chose to specialize in nonprofit accounting to support organizations like GOTR. Through my years in the nonprofit sector, I’ve learned the significance of volunteers, donations, and grant support.
Family & Growth
I married my college sweetheart, Paul, and we embarked on a life of adventure. Due to his thriving career, we lived in various states. This unique experience has enriched my accounting expertise, allowing me to understand the accounting landscape across the country.
In 2020, I achieved a significant milestone in my career by becoming an Enrolled Agent, a credential that allows me to represent clients before the IRS.
My family played a significant role in the establishment of my business. They provided support and encouragement, and my cousins were the ones who came up with the name Tally Up, leading to the birth of Tally Up Consulting.
We are now raising our son and daughter in the Triangle area, where I continue to grow my firm.
I enjoy spending time with my growing family, indulging in outdoor activities such as hiking, volunteering, and exploring new destinations worldwide.
my 2024 goal:
Run a Half-Marathon for Girls on the Run
To support the impactful mission of Girls on the Run (GOTR) Triangle, I am gearing up to take on a challenging half-marathon to raise funds and support the non-profit.
